I'd tried learning Python from YouTube before but never really got past the basics — I kept running into problems I didn't know how to fix. The Starter programme was different because someone actually read my code and told me specifically where I was going wrong. It took me about ten weeks working a few hours on weekends. By the end I could write a simple data script myself, which I couldn't do before.

The model-building series pushed me further than I expected. I already knew Python reasonably well, but I'd never actually trained a model end to end before. Each module produced a portfolio piece, which was important to me because I wanted something to show in a job application. The feedback on my work was genuinely useful — not just "good job" but actual commentary on my code structure. I'll note that it required more time than I'd estimated, but that's probably on me for underestimating the scope.

The capstone was the most demanding thing I'd done in a while. I built a classification model for a problem from my own work context, which made it more meaningful than a generic exercise. The mentor sessions were the part I valued most — someone going through my code and asking why I'd made certain choices. It's a proper commitment of time and effort, so I'd say anyone considering it should think carefully about whether they can dedicate those hours. For me it was worth it.

I was nervous starting because I'd heard AI is very technical. The Starter programme was clearly written for people who haven't coded before — it didn't assume anything. The pacing felt steady rather than rushed. I appreciated knowing what I'd be working on in each module before I started it. The email response time when I had questions was faster than I expected.

I work in data entry and wanted to understand what my company's data scientists actually do. The model-building programme answered that question better than anything I'd read. I won't pretend I found everything easy — the section on feature engineering took me several attempts to really follow. But the feedback on my assignment pointed me in the right direction. Straightforward, well-organised material.

What made the difference was the code review — my mentor didn't just check correctness, they questioned my design choices and suggested alternatives I hadn't considered.
